It depends on what you meant by software? Most servers run Apache and a bunch of other installed stuff (PHP, SQL for database, etc.)
To actually manage that stuff, from a user prospective, the most commonly used control panel is cPanel.

For shared hosting, you want to make sure the web hosting comes with cpanel interface. After that, you want to pick the company that sets up their web hosting and customer/help service to match your needs. For example, if you want to set up a WordPress blog on your own domain, pick Bluehost as they’ve made blog hosting simple and reliable. For more web hosting information and reviews, check out –

I use Fatcow which provides me with a cpanel that allows me to install with one click any of these:
WordPress
phpBB
Joomla
GBook
Many more pieces of popular software are made available with Fatcow control panel. Easy to use and reliable services from Fatcow: http://www.webhostingbreak.com/list/budget-web-hosting/
I find Linux based Cpanel hosting much easier to manage my web server with the help of free FTP.
